Breeder – Released by the Horticultural Department at North Dakota Agricultural College in 19571,2; Red Norland is a darker red line selection of Norland observed in 19654; Dark Red Norland, New Red Norland, Super Red Norland and Red Norland Strain 72 are line selections of Red Norland; Red Norland and Dark Red Norland are more readily grown than Norland5

Usage – Primarily used for fresh market1,2,3,4; very good for boiling, frying, chipping (best at harvest); fair for baking3,4
Plant – Medium to large size, spreading foliage with medium-thick, prominently angled stems1,2,3,4
Leaves – Dark green, glossy, slightly cupped, medium to large size; medium size, broadly ovate and slightly asymmetrical terminal leaflets; three pairs of primary leaflets with slightly pubescent petioles; numerous secondary and tertiary leaflets1,3
Flowers – Few, medium to large size, purple with a spreading habit; medium to large orange anthers with large green stigma1,4
Tubers – Oblong, slightly flattened, uniform size with smooth red (intensity can vary) skin; evenly distributed shallow eyes with medium deep eyebrows; white flesh1,2,3; low to intermediate specific gravity1,2,4
Strengths – Produces high numbers of US#1 grade tubers early in the growing season; seldom produces irregular shaped, knobby or growth cracked tubers; low level of tuber internal defects like hollow heart, internal necrosis and vascular discoloration observed; moderately resistant to common scab, potato wart, and Rhizoctonia1,2,3,4; highly resistant to potato virus A3
Weaknesses – Sensitive to drought; tubers susceptible to skinning and bruising if harvested before mature; susceptible to black leg, Fusarium dry rot, early and late blight, potato leafroll virus, Phoma rot, seed-piece decay, Verticillium wilt, potato virus X and Y; highly susceptible to silver scurf2,3,4; red skin color fades as tubers mature2,4
