Usage – Fresh specialty market6; great for roasting, steaming and salads5; can be used for chipping but not from cold storage3,5
Plant – Large, upright growth habit; medium size; green stems with strong equally distributed blue purple pigmentation1
Leaves – Medium green, open, pubescent, glossy on upper side with strong blue purple pigmentation on the upper side of the petiole and continuing up the main stem (rachis); terminal leaflets are narrow ovate with pointed leaf tips and blunt bases; medium presence of secondary leaflets1
Flowers –Large, star shape, white with very weak blue purple pigmentation on inner side1
Tubers – Long, oval to oblong, smooth blue purple skin1,2,5,6 with intermediate to shallow, evenly distributed eyes that have medium prominent eyebrows; blue purple flesh1,5,6; low specific gravity3,5; short tuber dormancy4,5; darker blue purple skin color than All Blue2
Strengths – Maintains flesh color after boiling, roasting or frying4,6; high in antioxidants and anthocyanins4,5; produces higher yields than other blue varieties3
Weaknesses – Susceptible to common scab2,3,4,6, silver scurf2,3,4 and Colorado potato beetle4; can produce misshapen tubers2
